The RT Road Call Mechanic is responsible for providing on-site, emergency, and mobile repair services to Resource Transport’s fleet of trucks and trailers. This role ensures that vehicles experiencing breakdowns or safety issues on the road are diagnosed and repaired quickly and effectively to minimize downtime. The Service Fleet Mechanic must demonstrate technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, field-based environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Respond promptly to road calls and emergency breakdowns to diagnose and repair Kenworth tractors, Timpte trailers, and engines including Paccar and Cummins models on-site.
- Perform troubleshooting and repairs on diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulics, and electrical systems in remote or roadside environments.
- Conduct mobile preventive maintenance inspections and minor repairs as needed to keep fleet vehicles in compliance and operational.
- Maintain and operate a fully equipped service truck with all necessary tools, parts, and supplies.
- Accurately document work performed, parts used, and service times using the company’s computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
- Communicate clearly with drivers, dispatch, and maintenance leadership regarding repair status and estimated downtime.
- Ensure all repairs comply with DOT, EPA, and company safety standards.
- Assist shop-based mechanics as needed during non-road call hours.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment both in the field and within the service truck.
- Provide excellent customer service and represent the company professionally while working directly with drivers and operations staff.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; trade school or technical certification in diesel mechanics preferred.
- Proven experience as a Diesel Mechanic, with emphasis on road service or field repair work strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of Kenworth tractors, Timpte trailers, and Paccar and Cummins engines.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision while making sound repair decisions in the field.
- Proficiency with diagnostic tools, roadside troubleshooting techniques, and fleer management systems (Fleetio experience preferred).
- CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) preferred but not required.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in diesel, heavy equipment, or fleet maintenance with strong diagnostic skills using computer software including Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link (DDDL), J-Pro, Davie, and Bendix ACom.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and safety awareness.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
- Able to provide own basic mechanic tools.
- Be able to read, write, and speak English.
Physical Requirements:
- Able to lift, carry, push, and pull up 50 lbs and occasionally more with assistance of medical devices.
- Able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb for extended periods during the workday.
- Able to work underneath, around, and inside heavy equipment in small spaces.
- Able to use hands and fingers for gripping, handling tools, operating diagnostic equipment, and performing precise mechanical repairs.
- Able to frequently reach above shoulder level and below the waist
- Able to safely operate hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, jacks, hoists, and other shop equipment.
- Able to climb ladders and mount/dismount heavy equipment safety.
- Able to work in varying environmental conditions including heat, cold, dust, grease, noise, vibration, and exposure to chemicals or fumes.
- Able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, and respirators when required.
- Able to visually inspect equipment, read gauges and technical manuals, and distinguish colors related to wiring and diagnostics.

Schedule: 2 weeks on / 1 week off rotation, 12-hour shifts
